About the Course

This course is a book study of Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst's latest work Disrupting Thinking: Why How We Read Matters. Have you read a book that pulls at the heart strings and inspires you to make changes? Beers and Probst give readers applicable ways to get students to engage with reading at that deep of a level. The text is very practical with examples ranging from kindergarten through college level teaching. Participants will engage with the text through discussions and showing their learning with a menu of options. At the end of the course, participants will create or modify a lesson plan that focuses on engaging readers at a deep level.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and effectively implement strategies for more responsive and effective literacy instruction.
  • Determine next steps/strategies for your individual classroom and how you will implement these strategies.
  • Define the elements required for a strong foundational literacy program and how they work in relationship with each other.
