Beyond Sentence Stems
About the Course
Teachers will actively participate in online learning to further develop their understanding of the many types of vocabulary necessary to teach students in a variety of content areas. We will investigate popular strategies such as a sentence stems and extend these beyond these to make sure that students have access to complex language as they navigate academic content.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Define and distinguish between “brick” and “mortar” words
- Define and explain the difference between function and form and how they are interrelated.
- Create expected student responses for a major unit that will in turn create appropriate sentence frames for a variety of language learners
- Differentiate expected student responses and subsequent sentence frames for a range of language proficiencies.
- Analyze teaching strategies that support rigorous language frames
Maggie Guntren is a District ESL/Dual Language Resource Teacher for Jeffco Public Schools who works with educators and leaders across the district to build structures and instructional practices focusing on equity, access, and culturally relevant and responsible pedagogy.
With 24 years of experience in the field education, spanning from the rural Mississippi Delta, to Santiago, Chile, Maggie believes that public education is the crux of a democracy. She knows the value of creative, authentic and relevant professional learning for teachers and the impact of great relationships and instructional coaching on the lives of students and school communities.
Maggie has landed in many incredible professional opportunities including winning a Fulbright Memorial Fund grant to Japan, securing a position as a Senior English Language Fellow with the United States Department of State, peer reviewing federal grants, leading academic teams for highly gifted summer programs at Johns Hopkins University and Duke University, consulting for the English Language Success Forum, and presenting a myriad of international and national conferences including TESOL, NABE, and La Cosecha. Maggie is affiliate faculty at Regis University.
Maggie is certified in Secondary Social Studies, K-12 Culturally and Linguistically Students, holds an initial principal license. She is trained in Cognitive Coaching and Adaptive Schools and was a national participant in School Retool, collaboration between the d.school at Stanford and IDEO.
Maggie holds a BA in History and teaching license from the University of Colorado at Boulder, an MA in Educational Foundations, Policy and Practice from the University of Colorado at Boulder , and recently completed an advanced Certificate in Administrator Excellence for English Learners, also from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
