Autism 101: Overall Information and Strategies to Use in Class

About the Course
Teachers will actively participate in online learning to further develop their understanding of the Autism Disorder and how it impacts the learning of these students. Specific applications will be made to practice by discussing different strategies to support students in the classroom setting.
Throughout the course, we will focus on an overview of the disability, how Autism impacts language/emotions, social interactions, cognitive and sensory needs. This will be through reading sections of the book, The Complete Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome by Tony Attwood as well as other readings and videos.

- Complete Guide To Aspergers Syndrome by Tony Attwood
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify strategies to support students with Autism in the general education setting.
- Develop knowledge of how Autism impacts social/emotional needs, cognitive needs, language needs, and sensory needs and how to accommodate these needs in large group settings.
- Create a plan using visual strategies and behavior management to provide a successful environment for students with Autism.
