A Teacher’s Path to Understanding and Teaching Children Affected by Trauma
About the Course
This course is based on the work of Bruce D. Perry, author of The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, What Happened to You (with Oprah Winfrey), and Born for Love. Dr. Perry is a child psychiatrist, an adjunct professor for behavioral sciences, and the senior fellow at the Child Trauma Academy in Houston, Texas. Dr. Perry developed the Neurosequential Model to explain how our brain develops “from the bottom up.”
Educators will view video segments of Dr. Perry, discuss selected readings, learn how childhood trauma (adverse childhood experiences) can impact any child, and develop a plan to regulate themselves and prepare for students who may be affected by trauma.
This course is appropriate for teachers K-12 and others who work in educational settings.
Upon completion of this course, the educator will be able to:
- Learn how the lower brain functions affect the cortex.
- Define the different levels of the brain according to the neurosequential model.
- Recognize that students’ behavior is most often reactive and not aimed at the teacher.
- Appreciate the importance of structure, predictability, and connection in a classroom.
- Develop a plan to regulate, relate, and reason with a student.
