Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist

About the Course
Educators who work in Jeffco will actively participate in an online book study reading Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist; a biography about disavowed white nationalist Derek Black. Educators will develop their understanding of the rise of white nationalism and political polarization in contemporary America and explore how Derek’s experiences in higher education helped him and others overcome divisions and hatred ultimately leading Derek to renounce white supremacy. This book study is intended to provide a safe space for educators to have discussions to further their personal journey in becoming anti-racists and strengthen educators for their students.
This course is appropriate for all educators prek-12 as well as DTLs, Counselors, Special Service Providers, Instructional Coaches, etc. All students will be asked to participate in all discussions and journals with an open and honest mindset.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Analyze and explain personal biases.
- Identify institutional racism within our society structures.
- Implement this knowledge to strengthen educators in the classroom and provide an equitable learning and anti-racist environment.
