About the Course

Picture books offer an excellent platform to share and include stories for students from an LGBTQ lens. They support building a kind, inclusive classroom environment while connecting to state standards. Students will participate in research and activities to gain an understanding on how to apply knowledge of current picture books to support  LGBTQ standards.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze the needs of their student population based on gender, ethnicity, race, cultural diversity, religious beliefs, and socio-economics. 
  • Recognize bias in children’s/young adult literature.
  • Analyze a book based on bias.
  • Build lessons to support standards using relevant picture books.
