About the Course

The purpose of this course is to provide English Language Arts teachers with the information, tools, and confidence to implement close reading strategies into their units of study. Throughout the course, teachers will actively participate in online learning to further develop their understanding of close reading, close reading instructional strategies, as well as close reading scaffolds for ELLs.

This course is appropriate for ELA teachers of all grade levels who are looking to move past reading comprehension and into deeper analysis of texts.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Define what close reading is and the purpose that it serves within the English Language Arts classroom.
  • Design a close reading system and approach that works for his or her own unique classroom needs and reading levels.
  • Create text-dependent questions that build from general comprehension to more complex analysis of a text.
  • Utilize the backwards design model in order to write learning objectives and select appropriate texts for the design of rigorous close reading lessons. 
  • Apply various close reading strategies across multiple genres of texts.
  • Incorporate appropriate scaffolds in order for all students, including multilingual learners, to access and analyze texts.
