Supporting the Grieving Student
About the Course
Teachers will actively participate in online learning to further develop their understanding of how grief and loss impact students in their classroom and learn practical steps they can take to support their students through this difficult life experience/transition. This course is appropriate for classroom teachers at all levels. Additionally, anyone in the educational setting who is currently or potentially will be supporting a grieving student could benefit from this course. Warning: this course covers sensitive material that could be triggering.
Required Text:
- The Grieving Student: A Teacher's Guide by David J. Schonfeld and Marcia Quackenbush
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Recognize the signs and indications of childhood bereavement.
- Understand the long-term and complex impact of a death experienced in childhood.
- Approach a grieving student with confidence.
- Enhance communication and collaboration to enable a bereaved student in their classroom to feel seen and supported.
- Practice self-care techniques while supporting students through a difficult and life-changing experience.
