Architects of Understanding: Building Blocks of Comprehension Instruction

About the Course
The best way to learn more about the design of whole-group reading instruction is to experience it yourself and then immediately apply that experience to plan for your students. Whether you are new to a resource, looking for a deeper connection, or planning your own units, each of the three self-paced modules in this course immerses participants in the critical attributes of comprehension instruction, including spiral and content-based design, close and shared reading, vocabulary instruction, and writing about texts and topics.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Articulate why a spiraling, content-based curriculum is an effective design for comprehension instruction.
- Articulate the rationale for and implement the critical components of close- and shared-reading, vocabulary instruction, and writing about texts and topics.
- Answer PLC Questions for an upcoming module: (1) What are students expected to learn? and (2) How will we know that they’ve learned?
