About the Course

What do students need to be successful at school?  Executive Functions (EF) lay the foundation for the development of critical life skills throughout one’s life. For students, these skills are necessary for learning, dealing with peer pressure & conflict, problem-solving, handling emotions, setting goals and so much more. Through this course, participants will learn how executive function skills and motivation form through brain development, define what EF skills are, and understand their importance. This course will also look at some common disorders seen in schools that can impact EF (ex. ADHD, ASD, Anxiety) as more students are needing EF supports through IEPs, 504s and ALPs.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Differentiate between executive function and self-regulation.
  • Analyze how executive function skills develop and how they are used.
  • Identify executive functioning needs.
  • Compare & contrast executive functioning amongst neurotypical and neuroatypical youth.
  • Design systems, structures, and interventions to support the development of executive functioning and motivation.

This course was so relevant and helpful for both building awareness as a teacher and for learning strategies to help develop executive function skills in the classroom. Highly recommend!
Christopher Buono
I found the subject and course content hugely interesting and useful/helpful. It's a good mix of text and video and illustration. The amount of work seemed appropriate. The assignments could be refined a bit; I found the initial assignments to be elementary.
Cali Knape
Course was way too much work for 2 credits. It was so full of information - good information - that the readings got to be very overwhelming. I learned a lot, but did the work of at least 3 credits.
