About the Course

Explore basic principles for developing academic vocabulary in your classroom. With a lens on supporting diverse learners, this course will cover a variety of topics that enhance a student’s academic vocabulary acquisition. This includes considering a student's socio-cultural influences, their individual learning styles, and prior vocabulary knowledge. Are students understanding the academic vocabulary that we are teaching them? What are some tools used to effectively review and support academic vocabulary instruction? Explore these questions and more in this class as we foster academic vocabulary acquisition for all students.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze the impact of socio-cultural influences on vocabulary learning and incorporate strategies to address these factors in instructional planning, ensuring inclusivity and responsiveness to diverse student needs.
  • Design differentiated vocabulary instruction plans that cater to diverse language proficiency levels, learning styles, and cultural backgrounds to promote equitable access to academic vocabulary.
  • Develop and implement instructional activities that integrate academic vocabulary within authentic contexts, fostering deeper understanding and retention among students.
  • Reflect on personal teaching experiences and apply insights gained from exploring theoretical foundations to enhance vocabulary instruction practices, promoting continuous professional growth as an educator.
  • Create several educational activities that facilitate collaborative vocabulary activities.
