About the Course

This course explores the themes and insights presented in Jonathan Haidt's The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion and will apply them to the educational context. Specifically, the course will examine how politics, religion, and other controversial topics can be managed in schools today at all grade levels.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explore the core concepts presented in "The Righteous Mind" and the social psychology behind political and religious beliefs..
  • Identify best practices for managing discussions about politics and religion in schools, promoting a balanced and respectful environment.
  • Develop guidelines for educators on how to address moral and ethical dilemmas in a way that respects diverse viewpoints.
  • Evaluate student choice and voice regarding content standards that pertain to religion and politics in a public education.
  • Create an inclusive academic environment encouraging community involvement, civic participation and inclusion of diverse political and religious views.
  • Apply the knowledge gained to real-life scenarios, share insights, and develop action plans for improving an inclusive and appropriate educational setting.
  • Understand assertive communication and boundary-setting strategies to enhance knowledge and discussion within schools while developing appropriate lessons to allow students to develop these skills.
