About the Course

Students will learn how to implement strategies that foster productive struggle as detailed in the text Productive Math Struggle, A 6-Point Action Plan for Fostering Perseverance, written by John J. San Giovanni, Susie Katt and Kevin J. Dykem. Through reading, reflection, discussions and completion of assignments participants will gain insights and practical strategies to implement in the classroom to promote and foster perseverance in the math classroom.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the key concepts and principles of Productive Math Struggle.
  • Plan ways to implement the 6 point action plan on fostering perseverance.
  • Learn how to modify math tasks to promote productive struggle.
  • Reflect on their teaching practices and make adjustments to create and foster student learning through productive struggle.
  • Complete a reflection journal on the 6 point action plan for fostering perseverance.

Great Class. The Strategies were very helpful. I learned that everyone has met a struggle in their life with either math, reading or writing. I also learned that Productive Struggle takes time, and YOU will make it through...at your own pace.
