Unstuck and Understood: Supporting Students with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

About the Course
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, a misunderstood and challenging anxiety disorder, causes unwanted intrusive thoughts and compulsions in about 5 elementary students and 20 high school students in an average-sized school every year (IOCDF, 2009) and can greatly affect their ability to focus on their learning in school. This course will teach you strategies to support and understand better your courageous students with OCD.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify what Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is and isn’t, including identifying obsessions and compulsions and how they may manifest in the classroom.
- Understand how OCD affects social interactions in the classroom and how treatment protocols outside of the classroom might affect your students with OCD.
- Help students with OCD advocate for their learning needs.
- Advocate for the educational and socio-emotional needs of students with OCD.
- Identify 504 accommodations that best support students with OCD.
- Create a summative presentation about OCD.
