About the Course

Teachers will actively participate in online learning to develop an understanding of Margaret S. Smith’s and Mary Kay Stein’s 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions through readings, discussions, and application of learning through a lesson plan that represents the 5 Practices.  

This course is designed for elementary level teachers of mathematics. 

Required Text:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Read and define the 5 Practices and their impact on student learning.
  • Discuss each of the 5 Practices and their importance on student learning. 
  • Evaluate a lesson script to identify the 5 Practices in action.  
  • Develop a lesson plan that showcases the 5 Practices. 
  • Analyze each of the 5 Practices and reflect on their implementation. 
  • Create a lesson plan showcasing each of the 5 Practices.
