The Basics of Speaking Spanish
About the Course
Many of our students and their families speak Spanish at home. When having meetings with these families, it is often nice to know the basics of introductions, and how to construct basic sentences using nouns specific to the classroom and the students' performance. This class is geared toward teaching those basics, as well as an introduction to some of the tools offered to help communication with this population of families. The primary outcome of this class is to have our Spanish speaking families feel more welcome and their voices heard with an open line of communication from their teachers.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Greet others and have introductory conversations (both formally and informally, understanding when to differentiate between the two).
- Internalize the impact on families of offering translated documents in the classroom and produce a translated class syllabus.
- Conjugate regular -ar, -ir, and -er verbs, as well as understand some of the most popular irregular verbs and how to form sentences around them.

Great pace of learning and just the right amount of rigor for a beginning speaker. I really liked working at my own pace and will use my new skills with colleagues, students, and families.

This was an excellent class, and I’m very grateful I took it. The instructor was incredibly supportive, understanding, and responsive throughout, especially when I fell behind due to being sick. He went out of his way to help me stay on track and succeed, which made a huge difference in my experience . Overall, a very positive and encouraging learning environment.
