Foundations of Special Education and Behavioral Health

About the Course
This course has been designed to create a foundation for all to meet the CDE licensure renewal requirement for Behavioral Health. It is focused on learning about culturally responsive, trauma- and evidence-informed practices, and increasing awareness of laws and practices related to Special Education. The course will focus on 3 main elements:
- Academics and Behavior with a Trauma and Equity Lens
- Special Education Law
- Behavior, Special and General Education Collaboration
This course is appropriate for primary & secondary teachers, counselors, teacher librarians, instructional coaches, and administrators.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Design responsive strategies and interventions tailored to the needs of students who have experienced trauma, considering cultural differences.
- Develop a trauma-informed classroom or school practices that outlines supports, resources, and actionable steps to improve outcomes for trauma-affected students.
- Analyze and apply Special Education Law requirements to design appropriate instruction and services for diverse learners.
- Develop and articulate an intentional plan that fosters collaboration between general educators and special educators.
