The Dyslexic Advantage: Unlocking the Hidden Potential of the Dyslexic Brain
About the Course
This course explores The Dyslexic Advantage by Brock and Fernette Eide as a framework for understanding dyslexia through a strengths-based lens. Rather than focusing solely on challenges, participants will examine how dyslexic thinking is associated with unique cognitive advantages in areas such as big-picture thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and innovation. Educators will learn to recognize the diverse profiles of dyslexic learners and challenge deficit-based narratives that often shape classroom practices and educational systems.
Through readings, discussions, and practical applications, participants will analyze research on dyslexia, reflect on equity and neurodiversity in education, and develop instructional strategies that leverage students’ strengths while providing targeted support. The course will also address culturally responsive and inclusive teaching practices, universal design for learning (UDL), and advocacy for neurodivergent students and families.
