About the Course

This course continues a book study of Uncovering the Logic of English: A Common-Sense Approach to Reading, Spelling, and Literacy by Denise Eide. The first study focused on the basic rules of English. In this study, students will continue to learn about the different phonic rules and anchor the rules into the different layers of the English language. Students will also work with understanding how to scope and sequence their plans to support their instruction of their own students. It is highly recommended that students take Basic Phonics for All before taking this course.

This is a Level 2 course and we strongly recommend you take the Basic Phonics for All Students Level 1 class as a prerequisite.

Required Text:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Implement phonic strategies to support improvement of reading and spelling.
  • Scaffold phonic strategies into manageable categories for their students.
  • Create scope and sequence specific to where individual students are performing on the pyramid of layers of English language.

Cali Knape
Great class if you are interested in how English actually works - phonemes, graphemes, and morphemes. Completely changed my outlook on how to teach my students reading and writing.
