Sold a Story: How The Three-Cueing System Has Failed Readers
About the Course
Throughout this course, students will listen to six episodes of a Podcast called, “Sold a Story” by journalist Emily Hanford. She brings in multiple interviews from parents, educators, students and even Lucy Calkins, “the reading guru”, to help us better understand the why behind the sudden urgency to change how we teach reading. Teachers will also read a variety of texts to help support the sudden shift and the science behind how this was a flawed system. Through the episodes and articles, teachers will participate in discussions, journal responses, and create a final product to give to leadership and staff within their buildings.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify the why and how behind the big shift in reading instruction and advocate for this shift amongst colleagues.
- Implement their knowledge to plan their reading instruction in their classrooms.
- Utilize Reading Rockets website to better support their students.

I really enjoyed this course, podcasts fit really well into my schedule and the discussion questions in the forum brought up some interesting ideas and questions to continue thinking about. The podcast itself is fantastic too. I am grateful I listened and had a place to process it!
