About the Course

In "The Anxious Generation" social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the mental health challenges affecting today’s children because of the decline of play-based childhoods since the 1980s—replaced by a phone-based culture in the 2010s. This course invites educators to examine the research surrounding rising levels of anxiety and depression in students, focusing on the cultural and developmental factors at play. Through collaborative discussions and practical applications, educators will develop a comprehensive action plan to support their students, with the added benefit of enhancing their own well-being, based on insights from the book.

Required Text:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze the effects of play decline and phone-based cultures on student mental health.
  • Evaluate the impact of technology on student well-being and propose mitigation plans.
  • Facilitate discussions to raise awareness of mental health issues caused by technology.
