About the Course

In this course, explore 22 high-leverage practices developed and published by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), in partnership with the Collaboration for Effective Educator Development, Accountability and Reform (CEEDAR). These HLP’s are intended to address the most critical practices that every K-12 special educator should utilize. The selected practices are used frequently in classrooms and have been shown to improve student outcomes if successfully implemented. Participants will have an opportunity to understand the practices, dig into the research and rationale, and see videos of teachers in action modeling the components of these research based practices. Teachers will have opportunities to collaborate with one another through discussion boards and complete weekly assignments designed to develop their understanding and identify implementation strategies.

Required Text:

  • Understand the research and rationale used to develop the HLP’s.
  • Analyze and reflect on ways in which educators are implementing these practices in their own settings.
  • Develop an action plan to implement a selection of HLP’s within their own practice.

Reviews

Peter Russo
This course provided practical strategies that I can use immediately in my work with students. I especially appreciated learning more about High Leverage Practices such as collaborating with families and colleagues, using data to guide instruction, developing effective IEP goals, implementing behavior supports, and creating inclusive learning environments. The course connected these concepts to real-world situations and helped me better understand how to support students with disabilities while ensuring their individual needs remain at the center of educational decisions.

I just wanted to let you know how beneficial this course was for me! As a veteran teacher but newcomer to public schools, this course really guided me and helped me see what I can do to help not only the sped students but all students. I appreciate the instructor's organization, reliability, and knowledge. Erin designed an engaging, thoughtful course and also gave helpful feedback. Would highly recommend!

I think that every educator should take this class. Many of the strategies presented are just examples of really good teaching (which many of us are doing anyway). Seeing them presented in this course reinforces their usefulness and helps us use them with increased intentionality.
