About the Course

In this course, explore 22 high-leverage practices developed and published by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), in partnership with the Collaboration for Effective Educator Development, Accountability and Reform (CEEDAR). These HLP’s are intended to address the most critical practices that every K-12 special educator should utilize. The selected practices are used frequently in classrooms and have been shown to improve student outcomes if successfully implemented. Participants will have an opportunity to understand the practices, dig into the research and rationale, and see videos of teachers in action modeling the components of these research based practices. Teachers will have opportunities to collaborate with one another through discussion boards and complete weekly assignments designed to develop their understanding and identify implementation strategies.

Required Text:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the 22 High Leverage Practices for Special Educators identified by the CEC, organized across 4 domains (collaboration, assessment, social emotional, instruction).
  • Understand the research and rationale used to develop the HLP’s.
  • Analyze and reflect on ways in which educators are implementing these practices in their own settings.
  • Develop an action plan to implement a selection of HLP’s within their own practice.

Reviews

Anna Kunk
This class was very informative and great for a General education teacher or Special education teacher. I appreciated that the assignments were directly tied to things I will use this school year. It gave me space to think about my own practice and make a few practical plans of how I'd like to adjust my practice for the upcoming school year. Great class!
