Using Visuals to Teach English Language Learners

About the Course
Using visuals is an effective, research-based method for teaching English language learners (ELLs) as well as their fellow classmates. Visuals support essential information and put classwork into a context that can make learning more understandable and comprehensible. Visuals can help lower learners' affective filter by relating to personal experiences.
This course is appropriate for all levels of teachers. Teacher librarians, instructional coaches, and administrators are invited to join us as well.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Establish the why of using visual aids in the classroom for ELLs and all students.
- Demonstrate how visuals and background knowledge can enhance vocabulary and academic language.
- Use a variety of formative and summative assessments to scaffold student learning.
- Implement social-emotional learning strategies to help their students succeed.
- Define and implement a culturally responsive classroom.

The assignments were meaningful and relevant to the classroom. I also appreciated that the assignments were manageable for full-time teachers. Collen was a great instructor that provided timely feedback on assignments.

What a fantastic course to satisfy the ELA requirement! Although I do not currently have any ELLs, I have been able to still implement so many of the tools even in my GT-cluster class. Colleen is a wonderful instructor and I enjoyed being able to work ahead in the course!
