Using Visuals to Teach English Language Learners
About the Course
Using visuals is an effective, research-based method for teaching English language learners (ELLs) as well as their fellow classmates. Visuals support essential information and put classwork into a context that can make learning more understandable and comprehensible. Visuals can help lower learners' affective filter by relating to personal experiences.
This course is appropriate for all levels of teachers. Teacher librarians, instructional coaches, and administrators are invited to join us as well.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Establish the why of using visual aids in the classroom for ELLs and all students.
- Demonstrate how visuals and background knowledge can enhance vocabulary and academic language.
- Use a variety of formative and summative assessments to scaffold student learning.
- Implement social-emotional learning strategies to help their students succeed.
- Define and implement a culturally responsive classroom.

This course has been very useful because it provides practical strategies I can apply directly in my classroom. What makes it even more valuable is the constant feedback from the instructor, which helped me feel guided, supported, and motivated throughout the learning process.

This class was time well spent. I have many great resources and ideas to use with my Kindergarteners once school starts.
